Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) [tem-puh-row-man-DIB-you-lar] is a condition affecting the jaw joint and surrounding muscles — and it’s something we often see linked to stress, tension and clenching habits.
What causes it?
• Stress and tension
• Teeth grinding or jaw clenching
• Poor posture (especially at desks!)
• Chewing habits or jaw overuse
• Injury or irritation to the jaw joint
Early warning signs:
• Jaw pain or tightness
• Clicking or popping when opening the mouth
• Headaches or facial tension
• Earache or pressure around the ears
• Difficulty chewing or opening the mouth fully
How to help prevent it:
• Be mindful of clenching during the day
• Reduce stress where possible
• Improve posture at work and when using phones
• Avoid excessive gum chewing
• Take regular breaks from desk work
What can help recovery:
• Gentle jaw exercises
• Hands on treatment
• Heat/ice depending on symptoms
• Stress management techniques – a decent 20-30 minute walk a day
• Addressing posture and muscle tension
If jaw tension or headaches have been bothering you recently, your body could be giving you signs it needs a little attention.
